Where is my Mahjong Community? (Places to play)

MAHJONG COMMUNITY TIPS FOR FINDING MAHJONG GAMES:

These were events that were organized prior to COVID. Please confirm if they are still scheduled or are being postponed. Thank you!

1. If you don’t know somewhere to play near you or where you are visiting, a great place to search is the website Meetup.com. It is free to join and search. Use different spellings of mahjong (mah jong, mahjongg, mah jongg) when searching.
2. Other members have found games by searching the Nextdoor app. Also, use different spellings.
3. When searching on Google, great searches include separate searches using Mahjong, Mahjongg, Mah Jongg and Mah-Jongg and the following terms:
  • instructors
  • classes
  • drop in
  • game
  • newcomers or newcomers club
  • the area you are looking for city, county, library, Temple, Church, community center
  • Institute for Learning in Retirement
4. Many libraries, continuing education classes, temples, churches, senior centers and community centers offer classes or are great resources to find a game.
5. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is an amazing foundation and has institutes across the country. They offer many different courses, which at times include mah jongg. It’s another great idea to search.
The information below is accurate when posted. Confirm before attending.  Please email us if there are any incorrect listings and/or for us to add additional places to play!

                                          • Buckham West, MN: Mahjong is a game of strategy that originated in China. It uses small rectangular tiles stamped with symbols and characters. The object of the game is to be the first to assemble combinations of these tiles into specific patterns that make up a hand. These combinations are assembled by picking and discarding tiles. Once you learn the fundamentals of the game and begin to play, you will understand why so many people love it! If you are interested in learning how to play, Buckham West is offering a series of four learning sessions from 10-11:30 a.m. Thursdays: April 21 and 28 and May 5 and 12. Class instructors will be Jacki Johnson, JoEllen Schulz, & Sandy Nelson. It is strongly recommended that participants plan to attend all four sessions in order to fully understand the game. This is a free class. Buckham West membership is required. Limited to 12 participants. Registration is required by calling 507-332-7357.

So I went to a ladies game night the church I was attending and took my mahjong set.  I taught them all how to play. The group started with 3, within a year it is now up to 14!   We meet on Fridays at 1 p.m.  Depending on how many are planning to come determines where we meet.  We take turns in our homes or if more than 12 are coming we meet in the chapel at our church.  Obviously we do not play for money.  We have outings once a month, on Tuesdays.  We go out to lunch mostly or visit historical sites or shopping.  We share joys, birthdays & help each other through burdens.  It has been a wonderful way for me to get to know people.
